Amazing Timelapse Montage
Thanks to @PatrickPilcher on Twitter for linking this up. So amazing…just had to share. Enjoy.
Timelapse Montage from Mike Flores on Vimeo.
A montage of my timelapse shots from the past year or so. This is just my timelapse showreel – it was never meant to be a standalone film.
The dolly moves were done using two custom track and dolly systems that I engineered, utilizing some off the shelf components.
I’m currently Beta testing an all-in-one motion control dolly system:The Stage Zero Timelapse Dolly Kit from www.dynamicperception.com and getting even better results.
Music is Hans Zimmer, “Dream is Collapsing” from the Inception soundtrack.
Cool Use of HTML5
This has been passed around the Internet the past week, but I wanted to touch on it here. If you visit the website http://www.thewildernessdowntown.com using a browser other than Chrome, you are prompted that your experience might be limited on the website. That being said, you might want to download Chrome JUST for this website. Let’s talk about it in a nutshell.
You go the the site, type in your address and hit Search. Yep, very straightforward. What you might not realize is that it is then pulling Google Map data for the location you specified. After a few seconds your video is ready. It plays a music video, using HTML5 and pops up windows that continue the story line. Your address is then converted to Google Map data and is shown in some of these windows. It showcases your address from a satellite standpoint and from a streetview standpoint. In some cases, you might have to pick a well known place, like the TWiT Cottage in California, to get this to work. I live in small town Iowa, and of course my house was not on Streetview. So, I chose to enter in the TWiT Cottage. (8 Keller Street, Petaluma, CA) The video was amazing. Me talking about it does not give the site justice, you have to check it out!
So, go get Chrome. Open Chrome, and type in http://www.thewildernessdowntown.com and type in your address or an address that you are certain is on Streetview.
Let me know what your thoughts are on this project and HTML5 as well.

The New FREE Calling Feature in Gmail
In this video I talk about the new calling feature in Gmail which allows you to make calls on your computer for free to any number in the US and Canada. I also compare it to the paid Skype Credit service.
I also learn how to answer my own questions… Enjoy!
Vibram FiveFingers
So, quite some time ago I saw these shoes online called Vibram FiveFingers. For a long time I had also considered actually getting them. At that time, I was in high school, and so I thought about wearing these in the hall and around school. The amount of foot traffic around the halls between classes is massive and I had a thought about my toes and feet somehow getting smashed by other students. Right? Because on these, there is not much protecting you from someone else’s massive feet covered in shoes. So, I did not get them. Now, out of high school and off on my own in a less hectic environment, I am considering them.
Why am I bringing these shoes up? Well, Thomas Jane of HBO’s Hung was in an interview recently where he could not thank Vibram enough for creating these new shoes. Here, take a look.
So, this is making me want to get these even more. Want more info on Vibram? Check out their website. http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/indexNA.cfm

Finally, the long anticipated Hulu Plus has been announced. It is right on their homepage and is offered at $9.99 a month. What do you get with Hulu Plus? Take a look. For one, content:

All in all, they are offering a lot of things for a very cheap price per month. You get access to back episodes of most TV shows, which you can now watch on your TV, xBox, and other mobile devices. For more, see this Hulu Plus video:
Pretty cool, huh? Will you pay for it?

Jailbroken iPad Comes with Bluetooth?
Are you one of the million people that bought an iPad? If so, I know some of you tried and succeeded at jailbreaking said device. Well, if you have gone that far, you might as well take it a bit further and add some bluetooth mouse support to the thing. Yeah! You can do that! No more touch screen for Mr. Jailbreak, instead use a new shiny Apple mouse to control your iPad. This video explains all. Happy watching:
Future of WordPress
Mashable.com had a chance to interview Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress. I run WordPress, love WordPress and build everything using WordPress. Thought it’d be great to support WordPress and Mashable at the same time.
Mashable added:
Mullenweg chatted with us about the demise of Ning and how buddyPress, his solution for communities, can help those folks who are left wondering about free alternatives. He also talked about how WordPress plans to compete with Tumblr, the status of the nonprofit WordPress Foundation, acquisition plans in 2010, WordPress’ focus on themes and even his favorite non-WordPress blogs.
Great interview, and cannot wait what is coming up for WordPress this year. Take a look:
Thanks, Mashable, for an awesome interview!
The Making of Florida One
One thing I absolutely love about technology is the ability to speed up recorded video and make a big mash-up of how a plane is put together. The making of Florida One from Southwest Airlines is depicted in this video. Enjoy the show.
Hulu Wants More Money
Internet TV company Hulu.com is going to be offering a paid service for $10.00 a month. This service would allow subscribers to view past episodes of TV shows. Currently there is a limit on how many episodes can be out for public viewing, but this paid service would give you full access to their database of shows.
The LA Times reports:
Hulu, which ranks second only to Google’s YouTube in terms of monthly video streams in the U.S., said it turned an operating profit in its two most recent quarters. The 2-year-old service, which is owned by media giants News Corp., NBC Universal and the Walt Disney Co., generated more than $100 million in revenue from advertising.
Ars Technia reports:
According to sources speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Hulu’s subscription tier will be called “Hulu Plus” and cost $9.95 per month. For that $9.95, subscribers will get access to back episodes of Hulu’s popular shows like Lost, Glee, and 30 Rock. Those who don’t want to fork over the cash will still be able to watch shows for free—but only the five most recent episodes.
So, will you buy a Hulu subscription if one is offered?
Hulu Review
If you miss out on watching a TV show on the actual TV…chances are that the show is on Hulu. Hulu is a free service in the United States that allows you to watch ad supported TV shows and movies. I watch Hulu, sadly, every single day. It is a great service to get caught up on shows as well. Say you miss three episodes of LOST and there is absolutely NO way to watch the current episode without getting confused or lost, so you should choose Hulu to watch all back episodes.
TV shows are usually released one day after the air date on networks except in some few cases where there are different copyright restrictions.
My favorite shows that I watch on Hulu are as follows: LOST, House, Family Guy, Castle, The Office, 30 Rock, The Biggest Loser, and many more. I also frequent their movie section, although movies are not updated as often as TV shows and are usually pretty old. Most movies are ones from before 2000, again, for copyright reasons.
Hulu…try it out. More reviews coming soon.
Video: YouTube vs. Viddler
I recorded a video describing my thoughts on YouTube and Viddler.
This video goes out to Greg, follow him on Twitter.
Enjoy.
Viddler.com Review
When I record video blog posts, I now use a service called Viddler. It is like YouTube, but a smaller community and in my opinion, a lot better services.
Upon creating an account, you can choose to upload a new video or record directly from a webcam. The record from webcam is the option I use every time. I use my integrated laptop cam and mic to record all my posts. And it works very well. Viddler processes your video as you record it, so there is no waiting ten minutes for the video to upload, like on YouTube.
It includes a lot of like features as YouTube, but to me, everything seems easier to access. Of course you have the title field, the tags field and the description field. But, all of these options can be changed right from one control panel. When viewing your videos, clicking Edit Details brings up a whole slew of setting changes. Six tabs at the top direct you to selecting a thumbnail, privacy settings, detail settings, embed settings, download settings and delete settings. I want to touch on one in particular …and that is the download tab. YouTube, to my knowledge, does not include a download option. I love that VIddler includes it, because when I record a video from my webcam, I download it from Viddler and upload it to YouTube to keep expanding my content area.
I also am impressed with the Viddler embed player. It looks nice, and has very simple controls. YouTube has given me problems in the past with embed code, but Viddler has not failed yet.
One final thing…Viddler allows you to upload your OWN icon in the lower third of the screen. Instead of the YouTube logo, you can make your own or include text. All of my videos are tagged with Tyler S. Miller at tylersmiller.com. This is totally free to do and if you feel generous enough, you can include the “Powered by Viddler” logo as well.
Viddler is a great video recording service and a great way to get your video content out there. It is free, has vast options and is worth a look.
Check it out, and let me know what you think of Viddler.com. Want to check out my Viddler videos? Check out: Videos on Tylersmiller.com

Microsoft Tablet?
It’s called the Microsoft Courier and is supposed to be a tablet PC / ebook reader.
We’re told Courier will function as a “digital journal,” and it’s designed to be seriously portable: it’s under an inch thick, weighs a little over a pound, and isn’t much bigger than a 5×7 photo when closed.
The internal components and software components are not running Windows 7 look-a-likes, rather they are running the same systems that operate the Zune and Windows Mobile Devices.
The interface appears to be pen-based and centered around drawing and writing, with built-in handwriting recognition and a corresponding web site that allows access to everything entered into the device in a blog-like format complete with comments. We’re also hearing that there will be a built-in camera, and there’s a headphone jack for media playback. Most interestingly, it looks like the Courier will also serve as Microsoft’s e-book device, with a dedicated ecosystem centered around reading.
There is no word yet on how much it’s going to cost and it is not due out until the end of 2010. So, all that we can go off of is this image:
Your thoughts on the Microsoft Courier?

School Webcams – FBI Involved
Here is an updated story from CNET on the case involving the school district that had been accused of using remote webcam technology to spy on students at home. CNET Article.
Quotes from the article:
The district said in a statement that the “security feature was installed to help locate a laptop in the event it was reported lost, missing or stolen so that the laptop could be returned to the student.” The district further explained that “upon a report of a suspected lost, stolen or missing laptop, the feature was activated by the district’s security and technology departments. The tracking-security feature was limited to taking a still image of the operator and the operator’s screen.” The district claims it has “not used the tracking feature or Webcam for any other purpose or in any other manner whatsoever.”
Subsequently, district Superintendent of Schools Christopher W. McGinley sent a letter to parents saying that the security tracking feature is being disabled and that there will be “a thorough review of the existing policies for student laptop use” and a “review of security procedures to help safeguard the protection of privacy, including a review of the instances in which the security software was activated.”
In the mean time, the Associated Press is reporting that the FBI is investigating the district and “will explore whether Lower Merion School District officials broke any federal wiretap or computer-intrusion laws,” according to an unnamed official who spoke to the AP.
Your continued thoughts on this?
Should software this powerful be installed on students laptops?
