There’s a New Digg?!

Yes, you read correctly, there is a new Digg.com.  Digg version 4 to be exact.  I was finally invited to the Digg v4 Alpha months ago, so that let me take a sneak peak at what was to come.  And I won’t lie, the new Digg was amazing in Alpha.  It is more social than ever and allows you to auto submit content from a verified RSS feed of your own.  Submitting content is so much easier now, and all submitted content doesn’t have that annoying Digg Bar.  YES!

Yesterday, Digg rolled out the new Digg v4 to everyone and if you go to http://digg.com, you will surely see the new Digg.  If not, you get a clever error page.  I compare this error page to the fail whale….because it is appearing a lot.  The site was fine for me yesterday, but today they must be experiencing a lot more traffic.  So, the Digg version of the Twitter Fail Whale appears.

Once you get beyond the broke axle, the new Digg is awesome.  It’s sleek, social, easy, and fun.  I notice less ads on the site and thank them for making it that way.  Not sure how long it will stay like that, but let’s hope for a while.  I love the social aspect of the site now, by making a new feature called My News, Digg allows more stories to hit the users’ homepages.  Before, there was one homepage, which showcased few stories daily.  The new logged-in user’s homepage showcases stories relevant and dugg from their friends on the site.  More stories are becoming popular and more sites get the Digg Effect.  There is still the normal overall home page by clicking on Top News, where you can find all subtopics as well, but the new My News feed is key.

Overall, I like the new Digg and will keep using the site.  I liked it before, but now, I actually will make it a point to log into it and check what my friends are up to.  What are your reactions to the new Digg?

Twitter Movie Parody

YES!  So, we have all seen the trailer for the upcoming movie devoted to telling the story of how Facebook got its start.  But now, there is this hilarious parody that involves social network Twitter.  Mashable deems the clip: “The mock-trailer for the fake movie, dubbed The Twit Network, pokes fun at the inanity of some tweets’ content, our collective self-absorption, our obsession with celebrities and the painful convention of affixing “tw-” to beginning of any word related to social media.”  The clip literally says it all.  So, here ya go.

Facebook Copies Twitter Rollover

On Twitter, you see a sort of pop-up when you hover over another Twitter user’s name.  It displays their name, location and other follower information.

I discovered Facebook now does the same thing. Take a look:

I think Facebook needs to stop copying Twitter.

Is this happening for everyone when they rollover a username?  Let me know!

Force Twitter Followers

In a world of bugs galore on websites, Twitter of course is involved in the mix.  Today, a major bug was found that allowed tweeters to force another Twitter user to follow you.  Your follower count could be raised in a matter of minutes!  Unfortunately the bug has been resolved, for the most part, and now it does not work.

Before the bug was fixed, you could do the following, according to Lifehacker:

1. Open the Twitter web interface (I haven’t been able to get it to work in the apps I’ve tried)
2. Tweet “accept username”, as in “accept oprah”
3. Wait a few seconds. You may get a server error, but that means it’s worked.
4. Check your followers list

So, no longer can that be achieved, but still…what an awesome hack to find on Twitter.  If the guy who discovered this kept it quiet long enough, he could build his Twitter following in a matter of days.  It would involve a lot of manual work, but if someone wanted it strong enough, gaining a million users would be accessible.

Earlier today, Twitter reset a lot of user’s Twitter counts back to “0″ and is in the process of cleaning up the mess back to normal.

In the end…really Twitter… can you really just type “accept tylrsmllr” and then you are following you.  Nice!

Clean Your Twitter Followers / Profile

So, you build up a bunch of followers, but you haven’t reached that 2000 following threshold…so, you’re SOL when trying to follow other people.  Following and the 2000 limit is of course referring to Twitter.  On Twitter, you can only follow 2000 people…unless 2000 people follow you.  2000 is the magic number.  Otherwise, you are considered spam to Twitter.  In any case, you will want to get rid of some people from time to time and there are a bunch of ways to weed out your followers and other content.  Mashable did a great post on this today and outlines some services very nicely.

The first service is Twitter Karma.

Twitter Karma offers a simple, free way of showing your Twitter contacts in a grid with a note beneath stating who is following whom. It can be used as an at-a-glance service, and you can make certain follow/unfollow actions from within the site. If you want to go in-depth, the contacts can be sorted in various ways.

The second is UnTweeps, which allows you to track which of your followers has not updated their status for a certain amount of days.  You can set it to 30 days, which is their default, and any users that haven’t updated in 30 days will be shown and you can unfollow them.

There are a few more services outlined on the Mashable blog here: http://mashable.com/2010/04/26/twitter-organize/ for cleaning out your followers/following on Twitter.  Great time to do all around spring cleaning in the house and online.

WordPress Q & A

Short blog post asking if anyone out there has any WordPress questions.  I’d like to turn this post into a great Q and A post on WordPress.

So, any questions on WordPress plugins, themes, coding, adding AdSense, etc?  If you do, just post your question here, and I’ll answer it.

Expect more of these Q & A posts in the future.  Remember, I am here for you.  And at any time, if there’s something dealing with technology, the Internet or computers, email me or find me on Twitter.  I’ll help ya out!

Follow Finder by Google

Need another tool to find Twitter followers?  Google has introduced Follow Finder.

Follow Finder analyzes public social graph information (following and follower lists) on Twitter to find people you might want to follow.

On the homepage, you enter your Twitter username, and it compares you with other Twitter users and suggests multiple people that might interest you.  This is a good move by Google, as most people are either on Facebook or Twitter and everyone wants more Twitter followers.  The more you have, the more chances of getting your content out you have.  From Google About:

Follow Finder generates two lists based on the public social connections on Twitter (follower and following lists):

  • Tweeps you might like: We start with the list of people you follow, find others with similar lists, and then identify accounts you might also want to follow. If people with similar lists tend to follow accounts that aren’t in your list, we’ll recommend those additional accounts to you. For example, if you follow CNN and the New York Times on Twitter, and most people who follow CNN and the New York Times also tend to follow TIME, we’ll suggest TIME as a user to follow.
  • Tweeps with similar followers: We find people with similar public lists of followers to yours. For example, if ten people are following you, and the same ten people are following a second user, we’ll include the second user in this list. You may already be following some of these people.
  • Here’s two suggestions I had when I tried out the service.  So, give Google Follow Finder a try today and increase your Twitter following!

    Twitter Surpasses 105 Million Users

The Chirp Dev conference has begun and it began with a bang…Twitter co-founder Biz Stone announces that Twitter has over 105 million users world wide.  They gain around 300,000 users daily and receive 600 million search queries.  Hopefully their new ad sponsored searches will create some revenue for the company, who has not implemented ads until this point.  Most of Twitter’s traffic still comes from third party applications.  The exact number is 75% comes from applications with the rest actually coming from Twitter.com.

The 140 character service still has a lot of users to gain before beating social network service Facebook, who flaunts an astounding 400 million users worldwide.  Facebook is slowly taking over the world, and Mark Zuckerburg is making $3 billion a year.  Hey, Mark, mind sending some of that my way?  Kthxbye!
