First Impressions: Apple MacBook Pro

Alright, I finally went on a shopping spree and bought myself a shiny MacBook Pro.  Check out this video to see my first impressions after having the laptop for a few days.  Enjoy!

What do you do to a brand new Mac?

Credit: Apple

The title of this post says it all.  What do you do with a brand new Mac?  Let’s back up a tad first.  Ok, so I was browsing the Apple store the other day and came across the 17 inch Mac Book Pro.  This computer is something I have always wanted.  I’ve wanted it longer than I can even remember.  So, on a slight whim and while using my 5 year old HP laptop, I ordered said 17 inch Mac Book Pro.  On the upside, I was able to use my college discount, but on the downside, that’s a mega chunk of change!

I have never owned a Mac before…unless you count installing Mac OS X onto my netbook PC.  None-the-less, I don’t know what to do with my Mac.  I am anticipating on doing a video unboxing, but I then want to get into using the new OS.  I’ve used Mac’s before, but only in school, where everything and anything is blocked and monitored.  So, what’s the first things you do with a new computer, more specifically a Mac?  Do you install certain applications or test out some features?  Please let me know.  Fill me in on all the things I need to do first off with this new machine.  I’m all ears and I need your help!

Leave a few comments telling me what to do first and what to check out.  I will be posting videos of my Mac in the coming days and am thinking about doing tutorials once I get into the OS more.  So, go for it, leave some comments.  Thanks!

Steve Jobs Hates WiFi

At the WWDC event, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, encountered WiFi issues.  Watch this and see what I mean:

Thats hilarious.  ”Get of the wifi.”  Yeah, right.  Nice try Steve.

Get a Mac Commercials

Remember those amazing commercials that Apple produced? The ones comparing a Mac to a PC? Well, they are drawing those ads to a close, but a tribute was found. Enjoy this 3 minute 45 second display of some of the good Mac vs PC memories:

Who’s Your Favorite Computer Manufacturer?

I buy and use computers from all different types of companies.  Apple, HP, Dell, Gateway, IBM, etc.

What is your favorite computer manufacturer and why?

Mine…well, definitely HP or Hewlett-Packard.  The company’s products are amazing.  I am currently typing this post on an HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop.  It’s 17 inch screen, full size keyboard and other internals make it a beast.  My netbook is a Gateway.  Yes, I did say Gateway.  The reason I went Gateway is because that’s all Best Buy had at the time…but I am happy with my investment and am overall satisfied with their product.

So, your favorite computer manufacturer, and why…GO!

Jailbroken iPad Comes with Bluetooth?

Are you one of the million people that bought an iPad?  If so, I know some of you tried and succeeded at jailbreaking said device.  Well, if you have gone that far, you might as well take it a bit further and add some bluetooth mouse support to the thing.  Yeah!  You can do that!  No more touch screen for Mr. Jailbreak, instead use a new shiny Apple mouse to control your iPad.  This video explains all.  Happy watching:

iPad Hits One Million

Credit: Apple

Apple released a report today officially stating that they have sold one million iPads to date.

In the press release, Apple claimed:

Apple® today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad™ on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction on April 3. iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.

CEO Steve Jobs even had a few words to say about the companies achievement:

“One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

That’s swell, over one million iPads sold to date.  Congrats Apple, on making more money than ever, and keeping products coming out to the public.

Been living in a cave?  Don’t know what the iPad is?  Apple included a statement in the release telling you what it is exactly.

iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch™ user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds—thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook—and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.

Apple is also touting their developers and applications:

Developers have created over 5,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.

Again, congrats to Apple for reaching this achievement, and they will most likely see more success in the future.  Do you have one of those one million iPad’s yet?!

Apple iAds

When the Apple iPhone 4.0 software came out, Apple also introduced a new way to do advertising in a mobile way.  Cue sound effects for Apple iAds.  At the time of iAd introductions, CEO Steve Jobs stated that they want to change the way ads are served.  Jobs is wanting to integrate ads into actual applications…not just searches.  The advertisements will lie within the applications, and be interactive.  They will no longer just sit there, but rather be interactive with the application user.  In the introduction keynote, Jobs stated the following: (As reported by Mashable)

When you click on an iAd advertisement, it will take up the screen using HTML5. Once it is open, you can explore the ad. Apple demoed an advertisement for Toy Story 3, demonstrating the ability to not only see information about the movie, but to watch trailers, play games and more — all within the same application from which you launched the ad. You will even be able to buy products within ads.

Great…ads become MORE relevant in today’s Internet based experience and now you can interact with them.  This opens up the doors to more possibilities in what can be done and served to users.

So, how do you benefit from this new ad platform?  Apple says that the developer of the application will receive 60% of all revenue for the ad within the app.  Apple gets the rest of the profits and is looking to make a big profit from this new platform.  For now, the ads will begin to be intergrated into the iPhone, and probably move onto the iPod Touch and the iPad in coming months.  Be on the look out for new ads in the iPhone apps.

iAds…good thing or bad?

iPad Vest

If you’ve been following my blog posts, you should have figured out that I don’t like the iPad for numerous reasons.  But I still plan on passing along news related to the iPad.  And this goes under iPad news.  Scottevest has come out with an iPad vest.

Mashable reports:

Enter Scottevest, the company known for gadget-friendly clothing, and their SeV Travel Vest, which is now compatible with the iPad. When we say “compatible”, we really mean “it has one humongous inside pocket for the iPad”, but that’s what you’re really looking for, right?

Want a vest for you iPad…have 100 bucks to send down the hole?  What other iPad accessories or components are coming out?  Think any of them are cool or worth it?

Facebook Connect comes to iTunes

It has been rumored that Facebook Connect, the global tool Facebook created to connect your websites and services to the biggest social network in the world.  It allows you to share information and recent activity from other services onto Facebook to alert all friends what you are doing.  Putting this in iTunes would allow you to share recent purchases, reviews and other things you do with your iTunes account and program.  This rumor can almost be confirmed because in recent months, Apple has begun moving their services to Facebook Fan Pages.  iTunes and the company have pages and offer a built in iTunes store to browse recommendations and featured items.  So, this only seems like the right move for Apple to combine their popular iPod and iPhone program with the largest social network.  Facebook now has over 400,000 million users worldwide.

TechCrunch reports:

To be clear, you can already share songs on iTunes using both Facebook and Twitter (the feature was introduced last September). It sounds like this integration would make this easier, and there’s obviously the possibly for Apple to leverage Facebook’s social graph in much more interesting ways in the future.

Facebook Connect is coming to iTunes if you like it or not.  The world is now revolving around Facebook and it’s popular Connect feature.  You will continue to see Facebook Connect being integrated into more websites across the Internet and you can expect Facebook to keep getting a bad rap for keeping and analyzing user information and data like other powerhouse Google.

iPad Internals Released

Ars Technica writes:

The Federal Communications Commission beat iFixit to the punch in publishing the first iPad take-apart photos, although the Commission did have an unfair advantage since it got pre-launch access to the device for its usual RF testing. The photos do give a first look at the iPad’s laser sculpted aluminum casing as well as a little detail about how the hardware is put together.

What’s not surprising is that most of the internal volume us taken up by two large Li-Ion batteries. The logic board is tiny and appears to be not much bigger than an iPhone. All of the internal components are jammed in there good and tight, as one might imagine. But what’s most surprising is that there is actually a good amount of empty space inside.

Did you get an iPad? Do you like it?  Think it’s all hype?

Who Got an iPad?

Short blog post:

I think the iPad is not worth the money.  I think the iPad is an over-sized iPod Touch and iPhone and not something I should invest in.  Can anyone change my mind?

Did you get an iPad?  If so, what are going to be your main uses for it?  Any bad experiences thus far?  How long did you wait in line?  Did you catch Steve Jobs at an Apple store?

So, post your reactions to the iPad…do you like the concept or think it is just hype?  I look forward to your comments.
